THE SHOCK OF THE NEW…MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE:1957

The Sun studio specifically:

“One take…and silence. It never had been silent in there before.”

Jerry Lee Lewis, on the recording of his signature song, from Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story (Rick Bragg, 2014)

and God knows what Steve Allen, for whom Jerry Lee would name one of his sons, really thought behind that professional smile…

  1. Pretty sure Steve Allen would have been on ‘his mountain’ lookin’ down a bit at JLL! Course, I could be ‘way off base’ but I always thought Steve was a little ‘full of himself’. Amazing to me that JLL named his son after him, but I suppose in the greater ‘scheme of things’ JLL was very grateful for the appearance on his TV show in 1957. TCB Johnny!

    • According to the bio I just read (which I’ll be reviewing soon), Allen and his staff were actually quite decent to Jerry Lee, gave him a chance at a time when “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” was falling from the charts and helped turn it around. JLL never forgot. I think at least part of the reason he was spared Allen’s usual snark toward rock and roll was because Steve was a piano player himself and he recognized just how skillful Lewis was….So often, it’s the little things!
