Dusty Springfield “Son of a Preacher Man”
“Interestingly enough, Jerry Wexler confirms that ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ was originally offered to Aretha Franklin–but she turned it down. It must have been Dusty’s sly, suggestive reading that made Aretha reconsider. She then cut the song in short order. Dusty reveals the only critique the Queen of Soul ever offered her. ‘All Aretha ever said to me–and I died–we were in a lift, and she just put her hand on my arm and went, ‘Girlll!’”
